WAJAMAMA

Transforming maternal and child healthcare across sub-Saharan Africa by equipping local healthcare workers to deliver safe, dignified, and comprehensive care.

We strengthen both sides of maternal and child care: how women experience care and how frontline healthcare workers deliver it.

Our locally adapted Group Care Model (GCM) brings women of similar gestational ages together in cohorts of 8-15 to journey through pregnancy and beyond. These women benefit from comprehensive perinatal care, including mental health screening and support, facilitated learning, and community building.

In parallel, our Healthcare Workforce Development (HWD) initiative equips government-employed frontline healthcare providers, including nurse-midwives, through simulation-based learning and mentorship to deliver safe, comprehensive, and trauma-informed care.

Today, we deliver GCM across seven public facilities and, in partnership with the State University of Zanzibar, have established Zanzibar's first high-fidelity simulation lab to equip nurse-midwifery students with practical, evidence-based skills. Together, these initiatives support increased perinatal care attendance, more facility-based births, and stronger trust in health systems, laying the groundwork for reduced maternal and neonatal mortality.
