Act for Children
Act for Children helps mothers, children and families in poverty and crisis with maternal and child healthcare, clean water, emergency relief and long-term support for orphans and widows.
In Uganda, Act for Children runs a health clinic project that cares for mothers and babies from pregnancy through birth and the first weeks of life, reaching about 2,000 people a year. Pregnant women get up to eight antenatal visits, check-ups, lab tests (blood count, urinalysis, blood group, malaria and HIV), ultrasound scans, essential medicines and nutritional supplements, and early care for high-risk pregnancies such as preeclampsia and anaemia. The clinic supports safe deliveries and refers complicated cases to specialised hospitals. After birth, postnatal visits follow the health, growth and feeding of mother and baby, with extra care for premature and low-birth-weight babies. The project also offers family planning, maternal mental-health support, childhood vaccinations with the national programme, community health education and outreach, medical equipment and staff training. The aim: fewer preventable maternal and newborn deaths.
